Where to get a breast pump

The Affordable Care Act (ACA): Breast Pump Coverage

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires health plans to cover breastfeeding support and supplies (breast pump).  This applies to private and commercial insurance carriers.

Breast pumps may be rented or purchased.  Rental pumps are generally not covered by insurance unless the baby remains hospitalized after the mother has been discharged and has medical needs. The purchase of a breast pump is covered under ACA. You may call your insurance carrier customer service number for more information and to determine if they require you to use a preferred supplier/vendor.

There are several Durable Medical Equipment (DME) providers in the Rochester area who carry breast pumps, as well as numerous National Durable Equipment Suppliers.

Breast Pump Rental (for providing milk for a baby with a medical need)

Most insurance plans cover the full rental cost of a hospital grade double electric pump when a baby remains hospitalized for certain medical needs after the mother has been discharged.  When the baby remains hospitalized, a prescription will be needed for the pump rental.  The prescription will cover a rental breast pump for a baby with:  prematurity (less than 32 weeks), neurologic disorder, genetic abnormality, anatomic or congenital malformation requiring surgery.  The hospital lactation consultant can assist you and answer any questions you may have.
