 Before your baby arrives, taking the time to learn about breastfeeding can help you feel more prepared and confident about what to expect. Many hospitals in our region offer birthing classes that include a breastfeeding component, and there are also dedicated breastfeeding classes available at little to no cost. These classes are offered in person and virtually, providing flexible options to fit your needs. No matter which format you choose, they are a great starting point for your breastfeeding journey.

After your baby arrives:

If you will be returning to work after giving birth, it’s important to establish a strong milk supply by breastfeeding on your baby’s cues—feeding as often as your baby desires. Once you return to work, planning for pumping will be essential.

In New York, employers are required to provide time for pumping breast milk, and as of 2024, new legislation ensures that these breaks are paid. You will also need a breast pump for work, and it is mandated for insurance companies to cover the cost of a breast pump.
